Astrological alchemy: some magical ingredients that make up an astrological chart

For the basic layout of a natal chart, the time and place of birth are needed from the start. More than just the sun sign, all the planets are analyzed.

The natal chart reveals the rising sign, which is the outward manifestation of the personality. And while most of the planets’ locations are listed by day in a book called the ephemeris, the sign of the moon is tricky since it changes so quickly. The moon sign is very important as it represents the emotional makeup of a person.

The divisions of the house are like the base paint of a classic work of art. This is a base that determines many of the variations or shades of the planets in the chart. Often sources of confusion, the nature of the twelve signs considered in the chart is somewhat altered depending on the house in which they are found. (see link below for more information on the houses)

So, we have all the planets, they have their various modifications specific to the chart of the individual, and there is still more, much more. Each of the signs indicated by their location at the time of birth also have certain automatically assigned properties.

For example, Leo is a fire sign designated by the elemental quality of fire. With the elements, all the signs fall into one of four categories. These categories are earth, air, fire and water.

Earth is the element of Taurus, Capricorn and Virgo which gives these signs earthy qualities. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are credited with the element of water which contributes to an intuitive nature. The air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius; these signs gravitate towards thought. The other two fire signs are Aries and Sagittarius: fire indicates sudden perception and visual flashes.

More categories come in the form of triplicities, quadruplicities, and dualities. In short, these are more geometric divisions used in later stages of chart development. They all integrate into the geometry of the circle and become more planetary reference points.

So, the most angular relationships are determined in the form of trines, oppositions and conjunctions. This process continues down to even smaller angles depending on how deep the graphic is. These angular relationships between the individual’s planets of birth describe the unique personality and are also used in prediction.

Basically, once the astrological analysis of the natal chart includes all these factors, the intrinsic makeup of a human being begins to take shape.
