gmail and me

Prelude:

My initial thought “Just because it offers more space, it doesn’t have to be good.” It was just another email account, the only difference was “1GB”! [the marketing team of Google has got my attention :-)]. I started using gmail with some initial reluctance as the load time was very similar to yahoo. The user interface ๐Ÿ™ was not catchy enough to grab the attention of first time users.

“Speed” was something that caught my eye first. These guys seemed to offer the service over a scalable network. I didn’t see anything new there! Then the tags feature was kind of hmmm hmm… piqued my interest. I was still afraid if it would escalate with 10,000 emails.

After this I started playing around with it, enabled the stars, applied the tags, etc. The UI feedback was very good! Post threading as tabs was nice too! Now these guys seem to be serious about what they’re doing. The mail archiving was pretty good! but I wasn’t completely impressed. The revert from archive provision was very thoughtful.

Here is a list of features, I found it useful:

* Automatic additions to contacts.

* Automatic storage of sent emails was good. (In yahoo you need to check a dumb checkbox!)

* Messages when there is no mail there, are funny “Hooray, no spam here!” etc…

* Automatic search results when we created filters were awesome. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

* Keyboard shortcuts are great!

* Deleting account information is considerate, it’s something I’ve cursed some email providers for not having! Having it gives you that feeling of freedom, of freeing yourself from something ๐Ÿ™‚

* The actual message along with the subject is quite helpful.

Some inconvenients:

* Initial loading time is slow

* No support for draft emails (now they are supporting draft emails)

* Removal options are hidden under more options (two expensive web clicks… yuck!)

* Some javascript bugs (harmless I guess, as all the actions performed seemed to work)
