Control of house centipedes is difficult and there are three main myths that float about them. But knowing the truth about these myths is key to finally getting rid of these scary and disgusting little guys! The three biggest myths are
myth one
An exterminator will take care of the problem. This is not true, and the exterminator may provide you with a temporary solution at best. Those chemicals they’re spraying aren’t permanent, they eventually wash off and then the centipedes come back. In fact, they can make the problem worse by killing insects that centipedes normally compete with for food, such as spiders.
myth two
Boric acid will get rid of your centipedes. Again, this is not true. It is an effect similar to the exterminator. And while boric acid is thankfully not as toxic as the chemical the exterminator uses, it still wears off over time and loses its effect.
myth three
Killing everyone you see will work. Unfortunately, this is not true. Each centipede lays on average around 60-120 eggs. And centipedes can complete their life cycle from inside your home. This means that even if you kill a mature centipede, before long those eggs will hatch and you’ll be back where you started.
So now that you know what doesn’t work, let’s review what does. To get rid of those centipedes, you need to have a step-by-step plan to eliminate the reasons they’re in your home in the first place.
