Almost everyone loves to go out and spend a few hours in the sun; however, many people do not realize the dangers posed by the sun. Although sunlight provides energy, stimulates people’s minds, and is important for vitamin D, overexposure can lead to a diagnosis of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and although sunlight is often the primary cause of this cancer, other factors may also be responsible. People who have a family history of cancer, spend long hours in tanning beds, or have sensitive skin are at higher risk of developing this type of cancer. Fortunately, there are several ways that people can avoid being diagnosed with this disease.
Pay attention to medication
Many medications contain ingredients that increase a person’s chances of getting sunburned, and unfortunately sunburn can dramatically increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Therefore, people should consult with their doctors to determine if their medications will increase their sensitivity to sunlight.
Use sunscreen
People should always make sure to wear sunscreen on a daily basis. Even if it is a cloudy day, sunscreen should be used. With many experts agreeing that the ozone layer is weakening, people can no longer rely on natural protection from sunlight. When choosing a sunscreen to use, people should make sure to choose one that has at least SPF 15 or higher. Also, people should make sure to apply sunscreen every 30 minutes or as recommended by the label.
Protective clothes
Another way to prevent skin cancer is by wearing protective clothing. If the skin is covered, sunlight cannot damage it. One item that is good to wear is a wide-brimmed hat. These hats will cover a large part of the individual’s face and neck. Also, some garments are specifically designed to protect the person from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. This type of clothing is especially useful for people who will be out in the sun for long periods of time.
Avoid tanning beds
Although many people want to tan all year round, tanning beds can be extremely dangerous. Tanning beds expose people to ultraviolet rays; however, these rays are much more dangerous than the sun’s ultraviolet rays. People who use tanning beds regularly are much more likely to develop melanoma, which is one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer.
Avoid sunlight
Although the sun is extremely important and extremely pleasant, it can present many dangers. Therefore, people should try to spend time outdoors during the evening hours rather than the peak hours of the sun.
