Roatán, the largest of the Bay Islands off the northern coast of Honduras, is emerging as a port of call for Western Caribbean cruise ships. The island has a mountainous column covered with jungle; beautiful beaches; and the second largest barrier reef in the world. The reef creates a haven for marine life and divers, but there’s so much more to this 40-mile-long island.
In addition to scuba diving and snorkeling, visitors can kayak through the turquoise blue water or try their luck on a chartered fishing trip. There are also glass-bottom boat tours, which allow you to see hundreds of different types of fish and coral that thrive in the water up close.
On the mainland, visitors can ride horses along the beaches or on the hills; mini golf; and take a thrilling zip-line ride over the forest canopy. Roatán also has cultural attractions, including the Institute of Marine Sciences, which offers a dolphin show. The Carambola Gardens and Marine Reserve features nature walks that provide a closer look at Roatán’s beautiful flowers and plants, as well as exotic birds and shy lizards. The garden’s “iguana wall” is a natural breeding ground for iguanas and parrots.
On the north coast of the island, Punta Gorda is the first Central American settlement of the Garífuna people, also known as the Black Caribs. Visitors can learn about the Garifuna lifestyle, music, and dance.
Roatán offers a blast from the past compared to other ports of call. Roatan is mysterious and rapidly gaining popularity. Visit now before all beachfront real estate is dominated by my luxury hotels and second homes.
